Indonesia is Vegan Heaven: A Guide for Travellers

Indonesia is vegan heaven. With a photo of Indonesian cuisines.

Indonesia is one of the best countries to be vegan. Why? Because lots of Indonesian food is traditionally vegan. You just need to know where to look!

There are heaps of vegan options in Indonesia and honestly really easy to find! Here’s my favourite vegan Indonesian. They’re really easy to find both in restaurants and on the bustling streets.

Must Try Dishes

  • Ketoprak

  • Tempe Goreng

  • Gado Gado

Ketoprak

It's made with a combination of fried tofu, steamed rice cakes, rice noodles, bean sprouts, cabbage, and cucumbers. It served with delicious peanut sauce, kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) and topped with fried shallots and krupuk. It’s honestly soooo good! A definite must try!!!

Tempe Goreng

A vegan classic! I love to pair it with samba - it’s the perfect snack! Add rice and its a meal!

Gado Gado

A salad on steroids! 💪💚 A mix of veggies, tofu, rice cakes, krupuk, and delicious peanut sauce. It usually comes with a steamed egg. So make sure to ask for no egg 🚫

Now that’s just to name a few of my favourites! There is heaps more! Indonesia is truly a vegan heaven!

Here's a pro tip:  Most dishes that look vegan typically is vegan-friendly! However, keep an eye out for sneaky ingredients like eggs( typically used to bind or coat fried foods), and terasi (fermented dried shrimp paste). When in doubt, simply ask before you indulge!
